Welcome to Oak Tree Class!

 

Hello and welcome to the Oak Tree class page where you will find information about the fun, exciting learning that has been happening each term.  Please also check our Class Dojo page, as there is lots of information and photos of what we have been doing on there.

 

Summer Term 1, 2026

 

🌍 Where We Live

 

This half term, our learning is centred around the theme “Where We Live.”
Through this topic, children will explore their homes, local area and the wider world, helping them to develop a strong sense of belonging and curiosity about the environment around them.

 

Our learning is creative, practical and connected, giving children meaningful opportunities to link new knowledge to their own lives.

 

📚 English

  • Writing animal poetry
  • Creating non-fiction writing about homes and our local area
  • Exploring storytelling through Martha Maps It Out
  • Developing key skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar

 

🔬 Science – Investigating Stories

We will become scientists by exploring questions linked to familiar stories:

  • Which material makes the strongest house?
  • What do plants need to grow?
  • Which materials float or sink?
  • What happens when things heat up or cool down?

Children will carry out simple investigations, make predictions and talk about what they notice.

 

🌍 Geography & History

  • Learning about our local area and how it has changed over time
  • Exploring maps and the UK
  • Developing an understanding of where we live in the world

🎨 Art & Design

  • Exploring the Derbyshire landscape
  • Using colour mixing, texture and natural materials
  • Learning about artists inspired by the countryside
  • Creating our own landscape artwork

 Computing

  • Exploring digital art using shapes
  • Creating pictures using technology
  • Beginning to understand simple data and patterns

We will focus on building positive relationships by exploring:

  • What makes a good friend
  • How our actions affect others
  • What to do if we have a worry
  • The difference between fair and unfair
  • Celebrating what makes us special

 

✝️ RE (Religious Education)

  • Learning about sacred books
  • Exploring stories from different religions
  • Understanding how we should treat others

 

🏃 PE

  • Developing skills through mini athletics
  • Focusing on health and wellbeing

 

 

 

Spring Term 1, 2026

 

🌏 Our Topic This Half Term: Incredible India

This half term, our class is learning all about India, exploring its culture, traditions and daily life through a range of exciting activities across the curriculum.

We will be:

  • 📚 Reading stories and traditional tales linked to India

  • 🌍 Comparing India and the UK using maps and geography

  • 🔬 Learning about living things and habitats in science

  • 🎨 Creating printed artwork inspired by Indian patterns and textiles

  • 🎶 Listening to and enjoying Indian music

  • 💬 Talking about difference, diversity and respect in PSHE

Special experience: While Mrs Slack is visiting India, the children will take part in video calls with her. This will give them a real-life opportunity to see India first-hand, ask questions, and learn about different cultures and ways of life in a meaningful and exciting way.

 

 

 

This term our topic is "FANTASTIC FESTIVALS" where our focus will be on Geography and looking at different types of festivals and how they are celebrated across the world.

 

 

In Maths we will be continuing to learn about number and addition and subtraction. Our Reception children will focus on counting and exploring numbers as well as shape and pattern. The year 1 will work on numbers to 50 as well as comparing numbers and counting.

In English the children will enjoy listening to different stories and poetry about Festivals and Celebrations. Our Reception children will be encouraged to have a go at their writing using the phonics from their Supersonic Phonic Friends. They will continue to learn through adult led activities to encourage independence, confidence and communication.

In Science we will be finding out about different animals and where our food comes from.

 

 

In RE, the children will be finding out about places of worship and why they are important in different communities.

We will all think about our Value for Life for the term which is RELATIONSHIPS and we will talk about the importance of thinking about others and how to feel happy!
