Welcome to the Ash Tree Class!

Hello and welcome to our key stage 2 class page. Here you can see what we have been learning about each term.

Urban Vs Rural Life

This term, we are learning about the city and countryside, comparing urban and rural life in Britain.

We are going on an exciting trip to London to the Houses of Parliament and the Natural History Museum as well as learning all about the capital city as part of our topic.

We are reading different texts that inspire our writing that include illustrative books like Voices in the Park, Poetry that creates imagery of urban and rural living and our class book for this term is Private Peaceful.

Our poetry to learn by heart is 'For the Fallen' and 'In Flander's Fields'

India and the Angry Earth

This half term, whilst still concentrating on the geography of India,  we will also investigate questions like “What are earthquakes and volcanoes? Where in the world do we find them? What do a volcanic eruptions and an earthquakes look and sound like? What causes earthquakes and how can they be measured? How do volcanoes and earthquakes affect the lives of people? What happened in Pompeii?”

In literacy, we will be writing information texts, descriptions in the style of and autobiography about living in India and writing based on the novel '‘When The Mountains Roared’ written by Jess Butterworth.

In Maths we will be focusing on fractions. Alongside our topic we will also be able to look at longitude and latitude to describe where earthquakes and volcanoes can be found on planet Earth. We will also learn how to use mathematical language to identify and draw 2-d shapes of volcanoes and use co-ordinates to plot their position. Using computer aided design, in Computing, we are going to be looking at designing 3D houses and using software to build and design models.

In Science, we are concentrating on forces and magnets and will be thinking about how different forces are put into action.

In Geography we will look at the causes of volcanoes and earthquakes and their destructive influences on people’s lives. Using Atlases and digital maps we will locate the world’s earthquake zones and volcanoes.

India and the Mighty Mountains

This term, we are taking a virtual trip to India, discovering the mighty mountains that stretch out over the country. We will be looking at the different climates there and comparing the climate with the UK. We will be exploring the mighty Mount Everest and the dangers that lurk on ascent to the summit.

Within literacy, we will be planning and writing short adventure narratives and diaries linked to the topic as well as designing our own information text to explain the Winter Olympics.

In Maths, we are learning about multiplication and division - from arrays to formal written methods, Years 5 and 6 will be looking at different methods of multiplication and division too.

In Art, we will be looking at tapestries and designing our own based on Indian tales. Then we will be putting our stitching skills to work - making our own tapestries to tell our Indian traditional tales.

ICT will take us on adventures to film animations and think about the use of different apps to do this.

All this along with our Science topic which is light - thinking about how shadows are formed, light and sources, opaque, transparent, translucent and how rays of incidence are either reflected or refracted dependent on the surface it hits.

A wonderful term ahead!

All along the seashore - Term 1

This term, we have been learning all about coastal features. We have studied erosion, built models, sketched seascaped, learnt sea shanties and have taken a trip to the seaside to reinforce our learning! Sandcastles were built, fish and chips eaten and first hand experience of the effects erosion has had on the coastline observed!

Take a look at our gallery to see the fun we had at the seaside!

In addition to this, we have been reading two wonderful books - Flotsam written by David Weisner and The Song of the Dolphin Boy by Elizabeth Laird.

We have written some fabulous descriptive narratives to accompany the graphic novel - Flotsam. Using the inspiration from the Song of the Dolphin Boy, we researched and wrote fantastic informative texts about dolphins.

In science, we have been looking at food chains and webs, habitats and classification.

Road Trip USA

Buckle up and put your sunglasses on – this half term we’re going on a road trip across the USA! We’ll start by ‘visiting’ the states where Native American tribes settled. We’ll use travel brochures and the internet to research New York and write diary entries documenting our adventures! Using maps, we’ll locate the USA and find the names of the states. We’ll look at the amazing lights of Times Square, make circuits and create a program for a tourist trip around New York. The story, The Indian in the Cupboard, will inspire us to write our diaries. We’ll explore Native American myths and write our own. After learning about their cultural significance, we’ll weave beautiful artwork. Looking at aerial views of natural landmarks, we’ll think about how they might have been formed. We’ll create travel brochures and make illuminated models of different landmarks. Then we’ll cook delicious dishes – would anyone like a corn dog?

Magnificent Mayans!
