Science Curriculum Statement

At White Peak Federation we want our children to be curious and interested and to have a sense of wonder in the world around them.  Science teaching at White Peak Federation aims to give all children a strong understanding of our world whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.  We endeavour to ensure that the Science curriculum we provide will give children the confidence and motivation to continue to further develop their skills into the next stages of their education and life experiences.

Our science curriculum is organised into a 2 year rolling program to ensure that all National Curriculum content is covered by the end of each Key Stage and that progression of scientific knowledge and skills is clearly mapped.  Wherever possible, our science topics are linked to our wider themed topics to allow for cross-curricular links to be made and for science knowledge and skills to be applied to relevant real life contexts.  In the EYFS children learn to make sense of the physical world by exploring and experiencing through play based and hands on activities.

Spoken language and discussion is key to our approach to science teaching.  Children are encouraged to formulate their own scientific questions and to consider ways of finding the answers as well as to make predictions about what they think might happen.  Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught throughout each topic and there is an expectation for children to make use of this when explaining their understanding of scientific concepts.
