Week 2 & 3

Living things and their environments

Last week, we looked at classifying.  There are millions of types of living things in the world, so it would be very difficult if we tried to describe and name each one individually.  To help us understand living things, scientists organise them into groups, according to features they share - this is called classification.  Scientists are always looking for characteristics or “observable features” which allow them to group different species together and see how they are related to each other.

The classification of plants and animals can be traced back to Ancient Greece.  Aristotle was a famous philosopher and scientist who lived 2,500 years ago and he was the first person to try and classify living things into groups.

The scientist who made it his life's mission to classify all living things was Carolus Linnaeus.

Task

I would like you to investigate who Linneaeus was? What did he do? Where was he from? etc. Write a short piece of research on his life's work.

Email the KS2 staff or post your work on the blog.

Living things and their environments

Week 1

This week, we are going to be looking at ways of classifying different things. I would like you to read through the presentation and have a go at the task set for you.

As an extension activity. I would like you to go into your garden and look for living things around you. How do you know that something is alive?  Then try and classify them into groups. Let me see how you did it through the blog or email.

Have fun!
