National Anthems
People sing patriotic songs to show love for their country. Many countries choose one patriotic song to be their national song, or anthem, which people play or sing at important events. Some national anthems are religious. Others are about important battles. Some simply express pride in the nation.
Listen to the UK's national anthem, think about the lyrics.
- What does this song tell you about the UK?
- If you were asked to draw a picture of England from the anthem which ideas would you choose? Why?
- What ideas are mentioned?
- Are there any ideas that don't give an accurate image of British people today?
- Why do you think those ideas are there? Do they have another purpose?
- Is it a good anthem? Why? Why not?
The Australian National Anthem
Read through the timeline of Australia's history and the way that they chose their national anthem.
There was a choice between two songs: Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia.
Listen to both of the songs and think about which one you might choose. Think about these questions:
- What does this song tell you about Australia?
- If you were asked to draw a picture of Australia from your song, which ideas would you choose? Why?
- What ideas are mentioned?
- Are there any ideas that don't give an accurate image of Australians today?
- Why do you think those ideas are there? Do they have another purpose?
- Is it a good anthem? Why? Why not?
If you were to write a school anthem, what important features would you include? when would you sing it?
